Photogenesis : About Us

Early in 2005, I started thinking about how to market the photography of myself and a select group of other artists online. I knew I didn’t want to go it alone with a small-time online portfolio, as an isolated island struggling for attention among thousands of others. The imagery world, I figured, wasn’t calling for yet another one of these. It also wasn’t calling for me to submit my imagery to a major ‘stock’ house, where our work would get buried in hundreds of thousands of other search-result thumbnails and likely never see the light of day.

What made the most sense, rather, was to create a new kind of agency: one with a focus on artistry – in our photographs, in our web design and brand identity, and even in our relationships. It would be by creatives and for creatives... and it would seek to do business with others who share an appreciation for the value of soulful, well-executed creative genius. I set about recruiting the partnership of a number of brilliant minds and experienced sages, and Photogenesis was born.

Now here we are at version 0.5. Our vision for Photogenesis, as well as our understanding of the current needs of the imagery world, have grown exponentially since 2005. But the core principles remain the same:

• To be the imagery destination of choice for those discerning art buyers who appreciate shopping at a lean, geographically diverse, no-filler library where the artistic value of image after image speaks for itself.

• To maintain the conscience more of an art gallery than a stock agency. Our images, though they're available for license, are the sort that might just as easily appear on a gallery wall. And just as you might come to an art gallery not knowing exactly what you want, the v1.0 Photogenesis site will have an innovative, Flash-based browse system (in addition to the more traditional keyword-search), allowing our clients to easily scan many images within a category for ideas.

• To give each artist a celebrated presence on our website, including (in v1.0) a Flash-based interactive dedicated to each portfolio. This will allow our clients to develop an awareness of their favorite artists over time, making for a more human, more reliable shopping experience. For our artists, meanwhile, greater exposure means getting the credit they deserve for their time and creativity.

• To operate with integrity and approachability, for our clients as well as for our photographers, who at Photogenesis enjoy unrivaled principles and practices in artist relations.

Please don’t forget to take a moment to let us know how you think we’re doing, or to tell us how you'd like to get involved.
